When diaper rash happens, it is all-hands-on-deck to heal it fast! What do you reach for? Do you look at the ingredients?
Common commercially available diaper rash “remedies” contain some synthetic ingredients, and can include petroleum-based oils, which are probable or possible known carcinogens. Also, talc. Talc is a naturally occurring silicate mineral that is found near asbestos—another naturally occurring silicate mineral. Although each has a different crystal structure, because of the close relationship between these two minerals, it is nearly impossible to completely separate them. Asbestos, when inhaled, is a known carcinogen. Some products are marketed as containing “asbestos-free talc”, however, there is no fool-proof way to know the level of asbestos in the product, and there is no known safe level. And, although, diaper rash cream is not inhaled, the International Agency for Research on Cancer recommends avoiding talc usage in the genital area, especially for females.
