Parabens

This is number three in a series of eight outlining ingredients commonly included in so-called healthy bath products that should be avoided and that are nowhere to be found in The Bath Shoppe line of products.

What are they? Any ingredient that ends in “paraben”. There are six main parabens used in body care products: propylparaben, isopropylparaben, butylparaben, isobutylparaben, ethylparaben, methylparaben. They are a group of chemicals used as artificial preservatives in cosmetic and body care products. They increase the shelf-life of the products by preventing or reducing the growth of harmful bacteria and mold. They can also be found in foods and beverages that are preserved with parabens.

Why should they be avoided?

  • Parabens act like the hormone estrogen in the body and disrupt the normal function of the hormone system of both males and females. (hormone disruptor)
  • Parabens affect reproductive system functioning, reproductive development, fertility, and birth outcomes.
  • Some parabens have been found to increase the risk for breast cancer and increase growth of breast cancer cells.
  • They can cause skin irritation.
  • Parabens can bioaccumulate in body fat tissue and exposure can be lifelong. Ceasing use of all paraben containing products can lower levels over time.

How can I avoid them?

  • Avoid processed/pre-packaged foods and beverages that may use parabens as preservatives. Opt to use raw food to cook.
  • Although many brands are committed to removing parabens from their product lines, it is best to check the ingredient label.
